Building a Secure and Sustainable Future

A Message from Our Leaders

Impact.
It's how we measure the reach and power of your Charleston Jewish Federation (CJF). CJF is about the relationships we build, the lives we enrich, and the shared commitment to supporting Jews and their lives here, in Israel, in Ukraine, and worldwide. We endeavor to create and sustain a space where everyone feels included, valued, and embraced.

CJF is about building bridges and standing together to fight antisemitism and hatred. Your support is instrumental in this fight as we continue to ensure the safety of our Jewish community while remembering the lessons of our past. It's about meaningfully supporting Jewish life and finding ways to ensure a strong future for generations to come.

As you will see, the impact of your investment in the Charleston Jewish Federation cannot be overstated. We hope you'll take time to absorb the magnitude of what we have accomplished together. We are grateful for your continued support. Thank you.

Led by the Federation, our community came together to stand in support of Israel, with 500+ attendees just days after the attacks on October 7th.

Along with 290,000 others, the Charleston Jewish Federation supported and organized community members to attend the March for Israel in Washington, D.C.

As we head into 2025, we are committed to deepening the bonds of Jewish Peoplehood that connect and sustain us, reinforcing our shared identity and collective responsibility.

Together, we respond to antisemitism

Now more than ever, we are responding to antisemitism with swift, impactful, and decisive action. Since October 7th, while other cities have faced uncertainty and unrest, our community has remained strong, stable, and secure. This is no coincidence. It is the direct result of our strategic collaboration with city officials, law enforcement, and community leaders, ensuring our collective safety and unity remain unwavering.

As we witness a 93% rise in antisemitic incidents here in SC, our community's robust SCN security program, akin to Israel's Iron Dome, has empowered our community members with the training and resources to confidently and safely continue to engage in Jewish life-including emergency funding for security for our Jewish day camp and schools.

When our youth needed extra support navigating antisemitism in their schools, we provided consultation, resources, and support to our families and schools. We prioritized ensuring our students' safety and well-being in their school environments.

In partnership with the ADL and SCN, we convened over 100 law enforcement leaders and professionals from across South Carolina to hear from leading experts in the field of hate crimes and antisemitism.

We convened leaders from our Jewish community, law enforcement, and local and state government for a robust discussion with Michael Masters, CEO of SCN, where he highlighted the crucial work that SCN is doing for our Jewish community as we navigate the post-October 7th institutional landscape.

JCRC worked closely with partners and municipalities to help pass 17 local hate crime ordinances across the state. We also played an integral role in advocating for and passing a statewide antisemitism bill.

As we head into 2025, we are committed to expanding our partnerships with school districts and individual schools to confront antisemitism and all forms of hate. CJF is proud to share that Charleston County School District has approved any school that wishes to become a NO PLACE FOR HATE school. We are committed to deepening our engagement with the broader community, empowering them to stand as allies alongside the Jewish people.

Together, we build bridges and strengthen relationships

The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Charleston is the advocacy and civic engagement arm of the Charleston Jewish Federation. Through personal and organizational relationships, we ensure that the Jewish community has a voice in the public square, meaningful partnerships with communities and organizations who share our values, and relationships with the leaders who make decisions that impact our daily lives.

Our Jewish Community Relations Council organized an inaugural Jewish advocacy day at the State House, where we met with legislators to advance important legislation with 77 SC Jewish community members in attendance.

We mobilized the community and made countless calls, sent thousands of emails, postcards, and tweets, ultimately passing a Hate Crime Bill in the State House, and the IHRA Antisemitism Bill into law.

Organized the first-ever Jewish American Heritage Month event at City Hall in partnership with the City of Charleston.

Every step forward in the fight against hate stems from the Charleston Jewish Federation’s relentless advocacy. Our collective voice is what brings change and secures a safer future for the Jewish community.” - Cara Spitz Rivera

We worked alongside countless community organizations, including the ACLU of South Carolina, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, ADL, Alliance for Full Acceptance, Mother Emanuel Church, Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and so many others in support of shared values and goals, and were even recognized with the Ally Award for our supportive partnership by the Alliance for Full Acceptance.

We provided opportunities for our community members to engage our elected officials by organizing programs like the Mayoral Candidate Forum, meetings at the State House and Capitol Hill, and leadership briefings with our Congressional leadership.

As we head into 2025, we aim to expand our advocacy efforts, deepen our partnerships with community organizations, and further engage our members in civic and legislative initiatives to ensure the continued safety, inclusivity, and vibrancy of our Jewish community.

Together, we care
for people in need

In challenging times and in the darkest moments of life, Charleston Jewish Federation is here. We are committed to addressing food insecurity through our distribution efforts, supporting Jewish Family Services of the Lowcountry with vital resources, and leading emergency campaigns to assist those in crisis.

150,000+ pounds of fresh produce and groceries distributed to those in need living in food deserts in the lowcountry

4 emergency campaigns for Israel, Maui, Turkey/ Syria, and Ukraine Refugee Resettlement

"Having worked and been involved in the Jewish community for over 40 years,l am very familiar with how Federations operate. And yours exemplifies the mission of service. You directly impact the lives of so many in need either with food security, educational needs, local and national political agendas, and more."

- Barbara Sternfield

As we head into 2025, we are unsure of the challenges that lay before us, but what you can count on, is the Federation being there - because we were there yesterday, we are here today, and we will be there tomorrow.

Together, we ensure thriving Jewish life

Building Jewish community and creating space to explore Jewish identity is integral to our mission. With each Jewish touchpoint and opportunity to engage, Jews are more likely to seek Jewish friends, raise children with strong Jewish identities, prioritize Jewish education and tradition, give to Jewish causes, and advocate for the needs of Jews locally, in Israel, and worldwide.

442 children ( aged 0-9) received Jewish books each month through CJF’s partnership with PJ Library. This represents a 22% increase over the previous year.

27 local kids received tuition assistance and grants to attend Jewish summer camp, 16 for the first time.

We connected 3,483 students to stories of the Holocaust through CJF’s REMEMBER Program Speaker’s Bureau, representing a 51% increase from the previous year.

"We had such a wonderful summer at Camp Judaea, thanks in-part to CJF. Our daughter got so much out of her time in the mountains.
She LOVES her friends, she can't stop singing her Jewish songs and even enjoyed the food! She has become so much closer to her Jewish identity by attending a sleepaway camp and being introduced to other Jewish campers and Israeli counselors."

- Scott Eisberg

350 community members came together to enjoy baseball, kosher food, and community at our annual Jewish Heritage Night with the Charleston RiverDogs.

Sending youth to Israel for immersive experiences deepens their connection to Jewish identity. Through our Partnership 2Gether program, we have created the opportunity for local teens to see Israel through the eyes of their peers.

As we head into 2025, we must continue to support these everyday opportunities. That is why we will continue to prioritize initiatives that foster Jewish learning, connection, and cultural preservation, ensuring that every generation has a strong sense of Jewish identity and belonging.

Together, we are ensuring our future

Our future depends on the generosity of community members who see the value of Jewish continuity. We have begun to build our future thanks to the generosity of our legacy and endowment donors. L'dor v'dor, we will be stronger and more resilient because of their investment, vision, and commitment to exploration, innovation, and growth in our community. This investment empowers leadership development and programs like Young Jewish Charleston, ensuring the next generation is ready to lead with purpose and passion.

Secured 17 million in future gifts through the Life and Legacy program. Thank you to our Legacy Donors.

500 people attended Young Jewish Charleston events, 127 of them new, highlighting the importance of engaging fresh faces to build a strong, connected, and thriving Jewish community for the future.

Charleston Jewish Federation partnered with the Stanley B. Farbstein Endowment at the Jewish Endowment Foundation of SC to engage young leaders in philanthropy, fostering connections and shaping the next generation of philanthropists in the community.

"I felt very alone in Charleston until I happened upon Young Jewish Charleston. This provided me with a kind and accepting community and a family away from home."

- Jill Goodman, YJC Co-Chair

As we head into 2025, we will build on this momentum by expanding our leadership development programs and strengthening our partnerships with the Jewish Endowment Foundation of SC to cultivate future philanthropists and community leaders. We aim to grow our legacy giving, ensuring Jewish life in Charleston thrives for generations.

Thank You.

Securing Our Jewish Future through endowments

Jewish tradition teaches that one of our key duties is to make the world a better place for future generations. Each of us, regardless of age, wealth, or affiliation, can leave a legacy that will support Jewish programs and services forever.

The Charleston Jewish Federation has several funds at the Jewish Endowment Foundation of SC, a supporting organization of the Charleston Jewish Federation and the Coastal Community Foundation.

A charitable contribution will grow the principal of these funds in order to help sustain the Charleston Jewish Federation and our programs for future generations.

We are thrilled to announce the establishment of two new funds:

Countering Antisemitism and Hate Fund

The recent escalation of violence in Israel has led to a significant increase in antisemitic incidents both nationally and locally. Our local Charleston Jewish community has felt the impact deeply, with the ADL's 2023 Audit highlighting a 140% increase in antisemitic incidents in South Carolina over the past year, with South Carolina specifically experiencing a 93% surge. Together with our community partners, we commit to ensuring that hate has no safe harbor in South Carolina. This fund will accelerate active initiatives to confront antisemitism and all forms of hate.

The Herb & Jean S. Rosner Family Fund to Support Charleston PJ Library:

We are thrilled to announce a generous gift from Herb Rosner to establish the Herb & Jean S. Rosner Family Fund to Support Charleston PJ Library, ensuring the program's sustainability for generations to come. The Rosner Family's seed gift to this fund will support Charleston PJ Library, enabling Charleston Jewish Federation to continue delivering high-quality Jewish books, programs, and resources to hundreds of families throughout the Lowcountry, fostering a love of learning and Jewish heritage in young children.

We invite interested contributors to join the PJ Library Legacy Society now to help secure a future for Jewish literacy. For a limited time, every gift to this new fund is matched 25% from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation to keep our children reading!

To learn how your gift to any of CJF's funds, now or as part of your life insurance or estate plan, can ensure we have the resources to address our future challenges, contact Rebecca Engel at Rebecca@jewishcharleston.org or 843-614-6484.
